Our Story
How Grace Capital City began, where we are now, and where we are headed…
OUR STORY
In 2013, Chris & Jessica Moerman began the long process of prayer to discern whether God might be inviting them to move from their home and church in Atlanta, GA to Washington, DC to plant a new church. They had been settled in Atlanta for the last 7 years, with Chris serving as the Associate Pastor at Grace Midtown Church, and Jessica completing her doctoral studies in Earth and Atmospheric Science. They loved Atlanta and their church, but sensed God might be inviting them to partner with Him in a new work in DC.
After a season of prayer and discernment, and with the backing and blessing of their sending church, Grace Midtown, they said yes to God’s call and began the task of preparing for this new endeavor. In the summer of 2015 they set out for DC with their then 5 month old son and a team of approximately 20 pioneers to plant Grace Capital City. The very first gathering took place in August, 2015. Eleven people gathered in the living room of Chris & Jessica, just small enough that they could make coffee and cook pancakes for all who attended. From there the group grew, vision was cast, community was formed and by God’s grace GCC was able to officially launch on Sunday, September 11th, 2016. Since its launch GCC has gathered in the historic, ‘Church of the Pilgrims’ building, right near DuPont Circle and strategically close to some of the major Universities of DC.
Grace Capital City is part of the the Grace Family of Churches, and was planted by Grace Midtown in Atlanta, GA.
